Muong Bi - Tan Lac, one of the four major Muong ethnic minority-inhabited regions in Hoa Binh, is known for not only its distinctive cultural identity but also its proud history of heroism, with great contributions to the victory against US invaders in the past. Today, Tan Lac district continues to uphold this legacy while embracing development and renewal.

In 2025, Tan Lac has sent 237 young people to the military service, meeting 100% of the recruitment quota.

During the struggle against the US, the armed forces of Tan Lac grew rapidly, comprising over 3,300 soldiers, or around 12% of the district’s population. They not only excelled in combat but also played a critical role in safeguarding key infrastructure, supplies, and the lives and property of the people.

The district’s forces participated in 297 battles against air raids of the US, shooting down three American aircraft, capturing 14 commandos and pilots of the enemy, and mobilising tens of thousands of troops to support the resistance war.

The spirit of patriotism extended beyond the battlefield and was demonstrated through local people's work and production efforts. Despite countless hardships, the community remained steadfast, ensuring that every grain of rice was sent to the frontlines to support the struggles. During the resistance wars against France and the US, 665 natives of Tan Lac sacrificed their lives on battlefields, while 272 others returned wounded. In recognition of their exceptional contributions, Tan Lac, seven of its communes – Lung Van, Tu Ne, Lo Son, Gia Mo, Man Duc, Ngoc My, and My Hoa, along with two martyrs – Quach Van Tham and Bui Van Tinh, were honoured with the title of Hero of the People’s Armed Forces by the Party and the State. Furthermore, 23 women were posthumously awarded the title of "Heroic Vietnamese Mother". The Party organisation and people of Tan Lac have been granted 2,050 orders and medals, hundreds of flags of commendation, and thousands of certificates of merit for their outstanding achievements in both military and civilian spheres.

Preserving the proud legacy of previous generations, Bui Kien Quoc, one of the 237 young recruits from Tan Lac in 2025, said that inspired by his hometown’s revolutionary heritage, he is determined to overcome all challenges and fulfil his duties, living up to the sacrifices of previous generations.

Bui Van Tinh, Chairman of the Tan Lac People's Committee, highlighted the continuous enhancement of the district’s defence - security capabilities under the guidance of local Party committees and authorities to meet national construction and safeguarding requirements in the new context. Many generations of the district’s young people, after completing their military service, have returned as leaders and key contributors to local development. They have also actively participated in labour and economic activities, helping the local Party organisation, administration, and people to build Tan Lac into a prosperous and thriving locality.

Over the years, the local Party organisation and administration have focused on driving economic development and improving living standards for the people. In 2024, the average per capita income in Tan Lac reached 44.1 million VND (1,729 USD) while the household poverty rate decreased to 6.53%. Social welfare programmes, cultural development, and defence - security have been promoted.
