(HBO) – Tan Lac district in Hoa Binh province has focused on directions to step up the implementation of the One Commune-One Product (OCOP) Programme, considering it as a key task, helping to optimise the potential and advantages of the locality, enhance the value of local farm produce, promote agricultural economy and rural area development in an effective and sustainable manner.

Chayote vegetable produced by Quyet Chien safe vegetable cooperative in Tan Lac has been recognised as a three-star OCOP product, contributing to improving income and reducing poverty for local people.

Quyet Chien commune once was one of the localities with extreme difficulties of Tan Lac district. In 2021, the commune was recognised as a new-style rural area thanks to the support from the State and the great efforts of local residents.

Quyet Chien has successfully implemented the safe vegetable farming model, with its chayote vegetable recognised as a three-star OCOP product, helping the locality complete the criteria in income of a new-style rural area, and reducing the number of poor households.

Chayote vegetable has been cultivated on a large scale in Quyet Chien since 2008. Tan Lac chayote has received a collective trademark certificate. In order to expand production and markets for the product, Quyet Chien cooperative was established in 2017 with seven members and a total farming area of more than 20 hectares.

To date, the cooperative has attracted 50 members with a total area of 50 hectares, producing more than 3,200 tonnes of vegetable per year, with a value of more than 250 million VND (10,631 USD) per hectare each year.

Dinh Thi Quyet, director of the cooperative, said that with products meeting VietGAP standards with traceability stamp on each product as well as careful packaging and preservation process, chayote and other kinds of vegetables of the cooperative have been sold in clean product shops and supermarkets in Hanoi and neighbouring localities.

Tan Lac has also implemented investment promotion activities with the aim of developing its typical OCOP products.

Along with chayote vegetable, Tan Lac also has six other three-star OCOP products. This year, the locality aims to develop two additional three-star OCOP products and one four-star product.

Phung Van Thai, from the Division of Agriculture and Rural Development of Tan Lac, said that in the time to come, the district will drastically implement its plan to carry out the OCOP programme, focusing on popularising the contents of the programme as well as effective models and typical products among the local community, encouraging and guiding locals to join the programme, building OCOP product introduction venues at district-level, and giving training to management officials, business owners, cooperatives and cooperative groups and producers engaging in the programme.

At the same time, the district will continue to support producers to upgrade their products and complete their production and quality management process, while expanding markets for the products, Thai said./.
