While making a fact-finding tour to Nam Son commune – one of the hardest hit regions by the historic flood in 2017, the official requested local authorities to coordinate with relevant agencies to build feasible resettlement plans, ensuring synchronous infrastructure from roads to electricity and water supply in association with environmental protection, production development, and local livelihood improvement.

Sixty-seven households in the commune are lying in the high-risk areas of landslides, mainly from Ton, Bai and Trong hamlets. At present, the district is building resettlement areas for the families.

Quang asked to attatch importance to population arrangement in line with planning, natural disaster prevention and climate change adaptation programmes as well as continue addressing flood consequences in 2017 and have plans to ensure long-term livelihood for residents.

While inspecting fruit and veggetables production projects in Quyet Chien commune, Tan Lac district, Quang hailed local farmers’ efforts to develop potential temperate vegetables including chayote. The district has over 80 hectares of vegetables, notably chayote – which could harvest several times with the average profit of 80 million VND per hectare in the first year.

With the support from the Republic of Korea organisation GNI, Quyet Chien and Lung Van communes have grown 3.5 hectares of temperate vegetables, harvesting 10 tonnes of vegetables worth 200 million VND per hectare. With the current potential, five mountainous communes in Tan Lac district could grow up to 120 hectares of chayote and temperate vegetables.

To help mountainous areas develop fruits and vegetables, Quang asked the provincial Department of Agriculture and Rural Area and Tan Lac district to implement more effectively support policies, help households develop production and increase investment in building production chains to ensure sustainable development./.
