(HBO) - On December 12, the Hoa Binh provincial People's Committee kicked off the provincial Citrus Fruit Festival and Agricultural Fair 2018 in Cao Phong town (Cao Phong district).

Attending the opening ceremony were Bui Van Tinh, member of the Party Central Committee and Secretary of the provincial Party Committee; and Nguyen Van Quang, Vice Secretary of the provincial Party Committee and Chairman of the provincial People's Committee. The events attracted a large number of businesses and people in Hoa Binh and from other localities.

Participating leaders cut the ribbon to begin the events.

Endowed with a favorable geographic location, Hoa Binh holds potential to develop a diverse and highly valued agricultural economy, which could in turn facilitate agricultural restructuring, sustainable development towards high added value, sustainable growth, and adaptation to climate change, in combination with new-style rural building.

To date, the province has formed a number of concentrated production zones, with 9,800 hectares of citrus trees, accounting for 80 percent of total fruit area in Hoa Binh and 5 percent the nation’s citrus tree area. Orange and pomelo are cultivated on 4,700 and 4,200 hectares, respectively. Particularly, the local trademarks of Cao Phong orange, Lac Thuy orange, and Tan Lac red pomelo have been protected, with 10 percent granted with VietGap certificates. On an annual basis, Hoa Binh produces more than 120,000 tonnes of citrus fruits and earns between 500 and 700 million VND per hectare on average.

Other popular local farming products include Hoa Binh purple sugar cane, Hoa Binh "can” wine, Mai Chau brocade, Luong Son organic vegetables, Tan Lac chayote, Son Thuy - Kim Boi longan, Da River shrimp and fish, Lac Son and Lac Thuy chicken, among others.

This year, the Citrus Fruit Festival, held at the provincial level for the first time, lasts until December 13, while the Hoa Binh Agricultural Fair is scheduled to end on December 16. The fair features 250 booths run by nearly 200 organisations and enterprises. This is a chance for the province to promote its local agricultural specialties, particularly citrus fruits.

On the occasion, the Vietnam Certification Centre presented the VietGAP certificates to 10 orange-farming households in Cao Phong district./.
