(HBO) – With vast fields, Phu Cuong commune in Tan Lac district, Hoa Binh province, has advantages in agricultural development. In addition, National Highway 6 that runs through Phu Cuong has also created favourable conditions for trade, services and handicraft production. Aware of the strength, the communal Party Committee and authorities have led the process of economic restructuring in order to improve people’s living standards.

Over the past years, Phu Cuong commune has mobilised the local community’s contribution to concrete rural roads, contributing to new-style rural area building.

Based on the local potential and characteristics, the commune’s Party Committee has issued resolutions in accordance with the local situation and tasks in each period. 14 Party cells in the commune are really the leaders at grassroots level.

On the basis of resolutions and action programmes of the communal Party Committee, especially the resolution adopted at the 22nd communal Party congress (2015-2020 tenure), the commune People’s Committee has put forth plans with specific targets and solutions.

Under the plans, agricultural production has maintained its dominating position. Therefore, the local Party Committee and authorities have instructed intensive farming to raise productivity and maintain food security in the commune.

Households have replaced low-productivity rice and corn in some areas with sweet potato. Locals have also been encouraged to plant trees of higher economic values in their gardens.

In 2019, Phu Cuong had a total farming area of 1,860 ha, with grain crops output totaled 5,401 tonnes, up 817 tonnes from the beginning of the tenure. The commune has also expanded the area of sweet potato to more than 500ha, and plans to build a brand name for the product.

Local households have turned to the commercial breeding of livestock and poultry. Currently, the commune has nearly 1,000 cows, more than 5,300 pigs and 32,000 poultry, helping to raise earnings from agricultural production to over 181.7 billion VND.

Apart from agriculture, small industry and handicraft production, trade and services have also made progress, generating jobs for local labourers. The small industry and handicraft, mainly woodwork, weaving and cement brick production, generated revenue of 49.28 billion VND, up 43.93 billion VND as compared with the beginning of the tenure.

The commune has actively sought markets for agricultural products. Local households have also made use of the advantages in transport and their products to open stores in service of tourists. Therefore, turnover from trade and tourism hit 77 billion VND, up 28.46 billion VND.

Over the past five years, Phu Cuong has overcome difficulties, especially those caused by natural disasters, to complete most set targets. Its economic restructure has been transformed significantly with agriculture, forestry and fishery making up 59 percent of the local economy, down 6 percent from the target set by the communal Party Congress; and handicraft, 41 percent, also up 6 percent. The locality’s annual per capita income is estimated at 40 million VND, fulfilling the set target./.
