From a normal bamboo tree, Nguyen Van Nam in Yen Tri commune, Yen Thuy district has transformed it into a "bamboo dragon". His works have been present in many countries.

Nguyen Van Nam, aged 75, is passionate about bending bamboo into dragons.

Many years ago, Nam presented an ornamental tree to the Government Office. He received a letter of thanks from the Government Office.

Then he planted, cared for and pruned trees in the shape of the word "ASEAN" as a gift to the embassies of ASEAN countries. To date, in addition to ASEAN countries’ embassies, he also presented dragon-shaped bamboo trees with world maps to the embassies of 12 other nations.

In recent years, Nam has bent bamboo trees into dragons. This type of tree is extremely difficult to be bent, and this work must be done right from the time bamboo shoots sprout about 10 cm above the ground. It takes up to 3 years of care and pruning to create a complete dragon-shaped ornamental tree pot.

In 2003, Vietnam hosted the 22nd Southeast Asia (SEA) Games. To promote his works, he planted and bent 44 dragon-shaped bamboo trees in 22 ornamental pots to give to the organising committee. His works impressed attending athletes and sports fans.

Asked why he did not sell the works he made but instead presenting as gifts, he shared he wanted to contribute to life and make the world know about Vietnam through ornamental plant products. After each time he presented the gift, many people have come to place orders. He can also earn tens to hundreds of millions of dong each year from planting bamboo and make ornamental trees.
