(HBO) - The Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Hoa Binh province has carried out comprehensive solutions to ensuring food safety in the locality since 2016 as part of efforts to implement the Prime Minister’s Direction No.13/CT-TTg.

The Department has recommended the provincial People’s Committee enhance the management of the quality of agricultural materials and the safety of agro-forestry-fishery products via issuing decision and a document No. 55/UBND-NNTN dated January 16, 2017. It has also joined hands with relevant departments and branches to promote inter-disciplined cooperation in food safety management in the locality.

The local agriculture sector has so far organised 48 training courses for 2,893 producers and businesspeople to raise their awareness of food safety and quality of agricultural materials as well as updating them on knowledge and legal regulations in the field. Ten courses and conferences to popularise advanced production were held for 572 people.

Three panels and over 100 banners disseminating responsible use of f pesticide chemicals were hung in Cao Phong orange growing areas and many other agro-fishery-forestry cultivation areas. In addition, some 50,500 leaflets were delivered through provincial women’s union, the municipal agriculture and rural development and economy desks to disseminate how to use chemicals and antibiotics responsibly in poultry and fish farming together with critical impacts when using unhygienic food.

Up to 1,774 businesses in the locality have committed to producing safe products while 289 pesticide businesses have pledged to obey legal regulations. The province has completed the list of 281 commercial names of pesticides and 198 chemical elements allowed to be used in Vietnam, which are being consumed in the province.

Authorities from the districts and the city’s Department of Agriculture and Rural Development inspected and re-inspected 196 C-rated businesses, 40 of which were small household businesses producing traditional pork pies and tofu.

They remained C rating for 140 out of 500 agricultural equipment and input trading businesses.

After the re-inspection, they have upgraded three businesses from C to B rating, revoked food hygiene and safety certificates granted to three others and requested competent state agency to withdraw the business registration certificate of another.

In addition, the province increased irregular interdisciplinary checks to examine food origins and handle violations. Some 11 businesses have received strict penalties while three cases involving high antibiotic residues in pork and contaminated seafood have been discovered and investigated.

Deputy Director of the provincial Department of Agriculture and Rural Development Vuong Dac Hung said beside these actions, the department has played an active role in certifying and promoting safe food products.

It has introduced 14 certified agribusinesses to join safe food promotion events such as Safe Farm Foods Week and week-long fairs for customers to identify safe farm products.

The province is now home to two farms that produce safe vegetables in supply chain in Dan Chu Commune (Hoa Binh city) and Hien Luong Commune (Da Bac district).

Some 35 food processing and trading businesses are applying for the granting of safe food certificates./.
